What you can eat during Navratri vrat – fast
What you can eat during Navratri vrat – fast: Although there are many food items one can eat but we should keep one thing in mind, It is a vrat. We should control the portion of food we are eating and how many times we are eating. According to Hindu religion – Sanatan Dharm, there are three king of food:
- Rajasic food
- Taamasic food
- Saatvik food
Examples include for Taamasic food: meat of an animal, fish, the fertilized egg, onion, garlic, scallion, leek, chive, mushroom, alcoholic beverages, durian, blue cheese, eggplant etc.
Those who are in spiritual pursuit such as fast are advised to avoid the Taamasic foods as they create desires and increase the mental dulness.
I believe we should not try to eat more then thrice a day.
You can have
- Fruits and curd / yogurt.
- In some areas, Sendha namak ( rock salt ) is considered to be fine for Vrat. So any wafers with rock salt. Try avoiding fried food.
- Lots of water.
- tea or coffee
- End of day, after puja, you can have chapati / puri of kuttu flour or singhada flour with some vegetable and sweet.
Navratri festivities give you a chance to get back to the roots and deviate from the day-to-day affair. Ingredients like kuttu atta, singhara atta, fresh vegetables, milk, yogurt and makhanas are preferred as they are light on the stomach and can be digested easily. Instead of regular salt, rock salt or sendha namak is used as it is pure and unprocessed. Those who do not wish to fast may follow a vegetarian satvik diet where ingredients like garlic and onions that produce heat in the body are avoided to allow your body to detox.
