Lohri Celebration Ritual – How Lohri is celebrated:  The Lohri festival is one of the most famous and greatly celebrated festivals of North India especially in Punjab and Haryana. Collection of lohri by children: On the Day of Lohri, before evening children go from door to door in the locality singing local folk songs and collect sweets and wood and also money. It is regarded auspicious to give these things to children.

The collections gathered by the children are known as Lohri and consist of til, gachchak, revari candy of til and sugar, gur (jaggery), moongphali (peanuts) and phuliya or popcorn. Lohri is then distributed at night during the festival. Till, peanuts, popcorn and other food items are also thrown into the fire.


The bonfire ceremony differs depending on the location in Punjab. In some parts, a small image of the Lohri goddess is made with gobar (cattle dung) decorating it, kindling a fire beneath it and chanting its praises. In other parts, the Lohri fire consists of cow dung and wood with no reference to the Lohri goddess.

The bonfire is lit at sunset in the main village square. People toss til – sesame seeds, gur, rewaries – sugar-candy with til on the bonfire, sit around it, sing and dance till the fire dies out. Some people perform a prayer and go around the fire. This is to show respect to the natural element of fire. It is traditional to offer guests til, gachchak, gur, moongphali (peanuts) and phuliya or popcorn. Milk and water is also poured around the bonfire by Hindus. This ritual is performed for thanking the Sun God and seeking his continued protection.

First Lohri celebration after marriage: In North India especially Punjab, Haryana and Delhi – in Punjabi culture, first lohri after the marriage is celebrated with great joy and happiness. The family and friends gather to congratulate the newlywed couple with the gifts, sweets and shagun (money as blessing).

First Lohri of the new born baby:  The first lohri of the new born baby is also celebrated with a great joy and happiness. The family member uncles, aunty, grandparents and friends bless the baby with gifts,  new cloths and shagun etc.

  • Encourage your children to plant new trees and saplings; since a lot of trees are cut down to arrange the wooden logs for the bonfire.
